Faith Building Block 5

Words Have Great Power

by Pastor John Hamel

“For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall SAY unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall BELIEVE that those things which he SAITH shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he SAITH. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” (Mark 11:23-24)

This is one of the most fascinating verses in all of Scripture.  Let’s look at it more closely.

First, Jesus said we could talk to the mountains in our lives and they would move. In the Bible, human obstacles are sometimes referred to as “mountains.”

Let’s look at one example of this.

“Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain…” (Zechariah 4:7)  The Amplified Bible renders this verse … “Who art thou, O great mountain [of human obstacles] …”

So you see, Jesus was referring to human obstacles when He referred to “this mountain.”

Jesus is telling us that we can speak to the human obstacles of sickness, family problems, finances, etc., and they will yield to us.  There is tremendous power released when we speak God’s solution to our problems.

We see something else when we look even more closely at Mark 11:23.

Jesus made reference to “saying” something to our problems three times there.  Read it again and you’ll find the words “SAY to this mountain,” “… believe that those things which ye SAITH” and “shall have whatsoever he SAITH.”

Three times in this one verse Jesus made reference to Believers having what they SAY.

Now, notice something else Jesus said in this very same verse.

He said, “…shall not doubt in his heart, but shall BELIEVE.”

Three times Jesus stressed the importance of saying something.  Only once did He mention the importance of believing something.

Jesus is quite obviously telling us that we must do three times more saying than believing if we want to see our obstacles removed.

This is a Spiritual Law that Jesus always applied in His own life.  Here He tells us that we must apply it to our lives as well.  I’ve applied it to mine with great success.

Most Believers have the “believing” part down all right but need lots of work on the “saying” part.

Jesus did not say that we would get what we believe.

Jesus said we would get what we say.

Too many Believers keep saying what they have for problems and things just keep getting worse for them!  They’re applying this Law of Faith in reverse.

It is when we stop speaking the problem and start speaking the solution that mountains start moving.

That’s what Jesus said!

A Modern Day Testimony of the Power of Words

A young woman came to us explaining she could never have children.  The doctors had told her it was “impossible.”

We shared this Spiritual Law with her and prayed.  We prayed for a husband and for children to come forth.  She stopped complaining.  She began to openly thank the Lord for her husband and children.

Within three years she met and married her husband, a Minister.

Within two years of that she miraculously had her first child.  Soon another child followed.

All because she changed the way she both SPOKE and BELIEVED!

When we talk, talk, talk about failure and inability, we receive, receive, receive failure and inability.  We drop to the level of our faithless words.

When we speak Scripture, success and ability, we rocket up to the level of our faith-filled words.

We are all products today of the words which were spoken over us yesterday as children or by ourselves as adults.

There is a narrative found in Mark 11:15-34 where a woman with an issue of blood for twelve years said, “If I touch but His clothes, I shall be whole.”

She touched Jesus' anointed clothing and was immediately healed, even as she had said.

Jesus then told the woman that she had initiated her own healing with her faith-filled words.

We can all learn something from that lady!

Thomas Alva Edison's Mother Spoke Words of Faith

Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor, scientist and businessman from Milan, Ohio, who literally changed the world with his inventions. He lived from 1847 to 1931. At the time of his death he had accumulated 2,332 patents worldwide for his inventions.

Amongst Edison's inventions were the incandescent light bulb, the phonograph cylinder for recording music and voices, the phonograph machine, the carbon microphone, the movie camera, electric power distribution for city and statewide usage, the electrographic vote counter, the electric generator, the alkaline battery, the mimeograph (copy) machine and the world's first cement mixing machine.

It is said of Thomas A. Edison, "He invented the future."

One day as a boy Thomas Edison came home from school and gave a note to his mother. He told her, "My teacher gave this paper to me and told me to only give it to my mother."

Thomas' mother's eyes were tearful as she spoke these words aloud to him: "Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn't have enough good teachers for training him. Please teach him yourself."

Thomas' mother decided to teach her child at home.

Many years after Thomas' mother died he became one of the greatest inventors the world had ever known. One day he was looking through old family keepsakes. He came upon a folded piece of paper which had been left in the corner of a desk drawer. It was the note he had carried home from school as a little boy for his mother to read.

He opened it and read, "Your son is addled (mentally ill). We won't let him come to school anymore."

Thomas Edison cried for hours that day before writing in his diary, "Thomas Alva Edison was an addled child that, by a hero mother, became the genius of the century."

Thomas' mother, Nancy, would not believe the words of failure written and spoken over her child by his teacher. Nor would she repeat them or even allow him to hear them.

As a result her son grew to be a man who exerted a degree of power in the world of technology of which no one ever dreamed for him - no one but his mother.

Although his mother died when he was only twenty-four years old, Thomas said of her, "My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me: and I felt I had something to live for, someone I must not disappoint."

As was the case with Nancy Edison and her little boy, Thomas, anyone can initiate the removal of their problems with faith-filled words.

We simply must say what the Bible says, in spite of our circumstances.  That’s when our circumstances will come in line with what God desires for us.

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” (Proverbs 18:21)

People who speak words of death eat the fruit of death.

People who speak words of life eat the fruit of life.

It’s not up to God how successful we are.  It’s up to us and our words.

This is the fifth Faith Building Block that must be laid in order to develop strong faith.

Make this Faith confession daily.  “I am a brand New Creation in Christ.  I am the righteousness of God.  I am seated in a place of authority with Christ.  I have the right to use Jesus’ Name.  My words have power over my life.”
