Fallen Angels and Evil Spirits

Their Origin & Their Destiny

by Pastor John Hamel

In this lesson we will be addressing rebellious angels who fell from the grace of God.

Angels, like man, were created with free-will.  Free-will is the ability to choose between God and evil, between benevolence and malevolence.  Free-will always carries with it the potential for rebellion.  Unfortunately, some of God’s created angels were talked into choosing evil by Lucifer, a special angel who held an extremely high position of authority at one time in both Heaven and in Earth.

Lucifer, the First Angel to Fall

“Lucifer” means “son of the morning.”  He was once the most beautiful and gifted of all created beings until he fell into pride.  Sadly, the most beautiful and gifted of all angels became the most evil and vile.  Lucifer's name was changed to Satan.  We see the first indication of this in Job 1:7.  He is also called the old serpent, the dragon, accuser of the brethren and the devourer as well as over two dozen other evil names.

Let's look at Isaiah's narrative of Satan's original casting down.

“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?” (Isaiah 14:12-17)

Imagine, the first created being to ever step outside the will of God was an angel.  This was not just any angel.  This was an angel that ruled on Planet Earth even before Adam was created.

This angel led worship before the Throne of God but through pride Lucifer chose to exalt himself, not realizing that anytime anyone anywhere for any reason exalts themselves, they become less like God, not more like God.

The moment we begin to look in the mirror, telling ourselves how beautiful, gifted, able and special we are, that is the same moment we step into rebellion and immediately begin the fall from grace.  Pride is believing a lie. Pride is a destroyer.

In his pride Lucifer made the foolish decision to ascend into Heaven and to exalt his throne above the Throne of God.  As a result he was cast down by God and stripped of all authority and power.

Now let us look at the Prophet Ezekiel's narrative of Lucifer's fall from grace.

“Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

"Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God ; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

"Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.” (Ezekiel 28:11-19)

In this narrative we see a perfect example of what is called "The Law of Double Reference."  In this case the Law of Double Reference is in play because although the King of Tyrus was being spoken to, it was actually Satan within him who was being addressed.  The King of Tyrus, in his pride, became possessed of Satan.

Although Ezekiel was addressing the King, the Holy Spirit was actually addressing Satan who was possessing him.  We know the Holy Spirit was addressing Satan because He said through Ezekiel, "Thou hast been in Eden, the Garden of God."  The only personalities who were in the Garden of Eden were Adam, Eve, God, God’s angels and Satan  The King of Tyrus was not in the Garden because he did not live until 3500 years later.

So it is very clear that it is Satan who is being addressed here by the Holy Spirit.

Satan Is a Living Spiritual Being

It is also very clear in the Scriptures that Lucifer, now known as Satan, is a person but not a human person.  He is a personality.  He is a living spiritual being.  He is not an evil force, idea, philosophy, abstract design or mythical being.  Satan is a fallen angel, the very first fallen angel.  He is a living entity with some very strong, very wrong ideas of his own.  Most Christians live in fear of him because they do not know what Jesus teaches concerning their authority over him.

“And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” (Luke 10:17-19)

The "serpents and scorpions" referred to by Jesus here are symbolic of Satan and demon powers. Jesus is making it perfectly clear that all Born Again Believers have absolute authority over Satan and demon powers. There is no need to fear Satan or demons when you know how to use your God-given authority. Satan, the fallen angel, is not as powerful as he would lead people to believe.  He knows he must bow his knee to the Name of Jesus when it is spoken by the lips of the Believer.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)

Satan is the consummate coward.  Although he would love for people to see him as the spiritual Lone Ranger, he never works alone.  He is a pack rat.  This is why he needs help from untold millions of fallen angels and other entities which Jesus referred to as "evil spirits" and "unclean spirits." (Matthew 10:1)  Like the schoolyard bully, Satan is not as tough as he wants everyone to believe he is.  He did not have the nerve to face Almighty God alone and he does not have the nerve to face you alone.

Fallen Angels & the Disembodied Spirits of Giants

When Satan attempted to overtake the Throne of God in Heaven, he convinced approximately one-third of Heaven's angels to follow him into his rebellion.  The Apostle John saw it in his revelation while in a trance on the Lord's Day.

"And his tail drew the third part of the stars of Heaven, and did cast them to the Earth... " (Revelation 12:4a)

Angels are often referred to as "stars" in the Bible. (Revelation 8:10-13; 9:1-2)

Here, when Satan was cast out of Heaven as a result of his rebellion, all of his rebel followers, totaling one-third of Heaven's angels, were forced to go with him.  Some of them, possibly untold millions, are still roaming free in the Earth right now.  Many others have already been bound in chains.

Some may ask, "Why are some still roaming free and others are bound in chains?"

Let's look to the Word of God for the answer to that question.

“And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” (Jude 1:6-7)

Satan's rebellious angels were forced out of their first estate in Heaven, their original spiritual domain, and literally invaded the earthly realm of man.  Right up until the time of Noah's Flood they were committing fornication with the human daughters of men, which resulted in the human women giving birth to what the Bible calls "giants."

"There were giants in the Earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown." (Genesis 6:4)

These ungodly giants (Hebrew: Nephilim) were partly natural and partly supernatural. (Genesis 6:1-8)

Apparently, so many of these ungodly giants, potentially millions, were produced over an extended period of history as a result of these ungodly unions that only a worldwide flood could rid the Earth of them all.  Hence, God's instruction for righteous Noah to build an ark to save himself and his family when this judgment by water occurred.

"And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before Me; for the Earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold I will destroy them with the Earth." (Genesis 6:13)

After the judgment of Noah's Flood, fallen angels once again began committing fornication with the human daughters of men.  As a result of these continuing ungodly unions there were no less than twenty nations of giants once again roaming the Earth.  During Israel's wilderness wanderings they were forced to deal with many of these nations of giants.

When Moses sent the twelve spies to investigate the Promised Land they returned with the report, "We saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which came out of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight." (Numbers 13:33)

The last remnants of these nations of ungodly giants were finally wiped out by King David's armies. (1 Chronicles 20:8)

Some have taught that the word "giant" used throughout the Old Testament is a reference to the degree of wickedness in Israel's enemies instead of actual body size. This is a grossly wrong interpretation of Scripture.

The primary Hebrew word used repeatedly for "giant" throughout the Old Testament is "gibbowr" and it actually means "powerful, mighty, strong, giant man."

The Hebrew word "nephilim" meaning "giants" is also used in Genesis 6:4 and Numbers 13:33.

Both words "gibbowr" and "nephilim" are specific references to the giant offspring of the sons of God and the daughters of men and are never used as references to the degree of wickedness in Israel's enemies.  Both words are specific references to actual physical stature.

Like their angelic fathers some of these partly natural, partly supernatural beings were of tremendous stature.  Some, such as Og, King of Bashan, were as tall as thirteen feet or more. (Deuteronomy 3:11)

Many giants even had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot. (1 Chronicles 20:4-8)

Many carried spears weighing up to twenty-five pounds and were able to utilize them with the same ease and proficiency as today's human Olympian handles a javelin weighing less than two pounds. (2 Samuel 21:16-22)

Lahmi, the giant brother of Goliath, carried a spear that was the size of a commercial weaver's beam. (1 Chronicles 20:5)

At the time of little David slaying Goliath, the giant was wearing a coat of armor weighing nearly 200 pounds and he stood nearly ten feet tall. (1 Samuel 17:4-6)

Once these giants came into existence they then began producing even more giant offspring amongst themselves without the assistance of human women. (2 Samuel 21:16-22; 1 Chronicles 20:4-8)

The Scripture is more than clear that Goliath, his big brother, Lahmi, and Og, King of Bashan, were not the only giants in the Bible. (Deuteronomy 3:11-13; 1 Chronicles 20:5)

There were entire nations of giants who continued to reproduce themselves, filling the land and continually attempting to violate God's claim on the Promised Land.  To name just a few, there were the Rephaims, Zuzims and Emims. (Genesis 14:5-6) The Kenites, Kenizzites, Hittites, Kadmonites, Perizzites, Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites were also nations of giants. (Genesis 15:19-21; Deuteronomy 2:10-12, 20-23; Joshua 12:4-8; 17:15; 18:16)

Interesting side note. The amazing revelation of the multiplicity of giants in Scripture should easily answer, for any Believer in the Bible, exactly who built the Pyramids of Egypt and other mysteries of gargantuan construction which still exist on Planet Earth today.

More Than One Category of Evil Spirits

Apparently all demon spirits are not simply fallen angels.

Some Bible scholars, based upon what we have just seen from the Scriptures, believe that another category of evil spirits is actually the disembodied spirits of potentially millions of dead giants.

Because the giants were born of both human and angelic parentage, they also are eternal beings. They did not cease to exist at the time of their physical deaths.  Therefore, many believe that the disembodied spirits of these giants continue to roam Planet Earth seeking embodiment in humans or animals as all other evil spirits do.

Some may ask, "Why did fallen angels fornicate with human women to begin with?"

I believe Satan had everything to do with this and his evil purpose was two-fold.

First, I believe he led his fallen angels in this type of immorality in an attempt to "cut off at the pass" God's promise to Adam and Eve of a Messiah-Redeemer.

Satan was attempting to contaminate pure, human, Adamite stock. His purpose was to keep the Messiah from being birthed as Adam and Eve's direct offspring. (Genesis 3:13-15)

Second, I also believe Satan did this in an attempt to avoid his own doom which God also prophesied at the very same time. Apparently, it seemed logical to Satan that the way to stop his own destruction would be to stop his Destroyer.

I believe that Satan's fallen angels who fornicated with human women, thus creating giants, are those who are presently bound in chains in Hell’s holding tank. They are awaiting their final judgment according to what we read in Jude 1:6 and 7.

However, Satan's fallen angels who did not fornicate with human women as well as the disembodied evil spirits of giants are both still roaming the Earth today.

Possibly, there are untold millions of both categories of evil spirits combined still loosed in the Earth, as well as other categories of which man presently knows nothing.

As many different categories of evil spirits as there may be, it is the will of God for Christians to hold them all in incarceration through prayer, authority and faith-filled words until Jesus comes.  This is what Jesus was telling His Disciples in Luke 10:17-19 as noted earlier in our study.

Believers Must Continually Resist Demon Powers

Fallen angels and evil spirits, whatever their origin, have absolutely no authority over the Born-Again Believer unless the Believer maintains an unhealthy disinterest in them.  The Born-Again Believer who either ignores demon spirits or denies their existence will be readily and easily controlled by them.

Satan recognizes the Christian's authority far more readily than most Christians do.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren in the world.” (1 Peter 5:8-9)

The word "adversary" in this verse means "enemy of holiness."  The word "devil" means "a deceiver" and "an enemy of righteousness, God and humanity."  Roaring lion is reference to "a liar." (John 8:44)  The word "devour" means "one who seeks to destroy health, mind, prosperity and family."

These words clearly reveal that Satan is irrevocably and irretrievably evil, an enemy of holiness, a deceiver, a liar and a destroyer as are all evil spirits.

When the Apostle Peter said to "be sober" he was admonishing Christians to stop approaching Christianity like a bunch of silly clowns playing religious games.  He was telling Believers to clean up their acts and to recognize they have enemies in this Earth who are in the destruction business.

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12)

To wrestle is to withstand or to resist. Believers must continually resist these demon powers.

Many times demon powers will directly attack the Christian.  Other times demons will indirectly attack through other human beings.  In either case, demon spirits must bow their knee to the Believer when told to do so in Jesus' Name.

Fallen angels are organized and operating according to the same type of strategy they learned while still in Heaven.  However, as organized as they may be, the Name of Jesus sends fallen angels and all evil spirits into utter chaos and confusion.

Jesus said we must "bind the strong man," a reference to Satan and demon powers, in order to prevent them from plundering our lives. (Matthew 12:29)  When commanded, they will stop for a season, even as they did for Jesus, only to come around looking for trouble again. (Luke 4:13)  Believers will spend the rest of their lives on Earth maintaining authority over fallen angels and evil spirits.

Jesus spent His entire life on Earth dealing with Satan and evil spirits directly and indirectly and the servant is not above their Master. (Matthew 10:24)  Resist them, like Jesus resisted them, and they will flee from you as they fled from Jesus.

Demon Powers Have Been Crushed by Christ

“Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” (Colossians 2:14-15)

Here the Apostle Paul makes clear reference to the fact that demonic principalities and powers have been crushed and defeated by Jesus' triumphant crucifixion.  Even as they must obey Jesus, they must obey the obedient disciple of Jesus.

“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;” (Hebrews 2:14)

Again, here we have clear Scriptural evidence that Jesus became a flesh and blood Man in order to legally cancel Satan's death-grip on humanity.  As a human Jesus defeated Satan and now any human who belongs to Christ can and must enforce Satan's defeat. All evil spirits are subject to all Believers in Christ.

“Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:20)

What could be clearer?  Jesus has given every Believer dominion over Satan and demon powers.  He could not have possibly been more clear than when He said, "The spirits are subject to you."  Here Jesus is addressing all disciples concerning their delegated authority over fallen angels and evil, demon spirits.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)

When one submits to Holy God by submitting to His Word, the devil, his angels and demons have no choice but to obey voice commands given to them by Jesus' disciples.

“He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3:8)

The word "committeth" in this verse is a reference to someone who habitually and repeatedly sins without remorse.  This is not a reference to the Believer who stumbles and makes mistakes.  When the Believer stumbles and makes mistakes, a simple confession of wrongdoing will cleanse them of all unrighteousness and they are free to once again use their authority over Satan, fallen angels and demons. (1 John 1:9)

Jesus came to Planet Earth for this very purpose.  He came to destroy Satan, fallen angels and evil spirits grip on fallen man, and He has done just that.  All Believers must now rise up and enforce their defeat in Jesus' Strong Name.

You may be thinking, "Pastor, how do I do that?"  It is simple.  Open your mouth and say, "Satan and demon powers, I enforce Christ's defeat of you in my life.  Go in Jesus' Strong Name."

The Ultimate Destiny of Satan and Fallen Angels

“The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.” (Isaiah 24:22-22)

Jesus is coming to punish and to permanently incarcerate these fallen angels, former “high ones from on High” and all demonic spirits and demonic kings of the Earth.  They will be locked up for a thousand years during the Millennial Reign of Christ.  At the end of the 1000 years they will be released, utterly defeated and cast into the Lake of Fire eternally. (Revelation 20:1-15)

But for now, it is the Believer's responsibility to hold them in incarceration with the words of their mouth, the Word of God and the Strong Name of Jesus.

“And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it.” (Isaiah 25:7-8)

Satan, fallen angels and demon powers have cast a covering of fear and unbelief over all the face of the Earth.  Jesus will come soon and destroy these veils.  Russia, America, Iran, the Middle East, China and all the nations of the world continue to operate under veils of fear, deception and unbelief until that day.  This is why we must continue to preach the Gospel on behalf of those who would choose to come out from under those veils when given the opportunity.

We must command Satan and demon powers to remove the Gospel blinders from the eyes of the world's population in order that their hearts may be opened to Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:4)

We must ask God to send laborers to them who will preach the Gospel to them, in order that they may make a decision to follow Christ. (Matthew 9:36-38; Romans 10:9-15)

When God is satisfied that as many as will be saved have been saved, He will call for the removal of His Body from Planet Earth.

“And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.  And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.” (Revelation 19:19-21)

“And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”  (Revelation 20:7-10)

While we await the day of Satan and demon powers final incarceration, we must continue to enforce Christ's authority over them in the Earth.

Christ's Church is not a defeated Church. Christ's Church is a Glorious Church.  A Triumphant Church.  There is no place for fear in the life of the Believer.  Satan and demon powers are consumed with fear of knowledgeable Believers in Jesus Christ.

I am convinced Satan looks under his bed at night before going to sleep to be sure there are not any Believers under there.  That, of course, is a joke, but Satan's, fallen angels' and demons' absolute fear of knowledgeable, sober Christians who walk in their authority is no joke.

“Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.” (2 Corinthians 2:14)

The Apostle Paul’s use of the word “triumph” is a reference to the mature, obedient, knowledgeable Believer’s “complete mastery over Lucifer, Satan, fallen angels and demons.”

The Believer in Jesus Christ makes a great mistake when waiting for God to do something about the devil.  God has done all He is doing to do about the devil, fallen angels and evil spirits.

God now waits on the Believer to accept their responsibility to hold them in incarceration until Jesus comes to finish the job.

Open your mouth and boldly say, “Satan, you must bow your knee to the Greater One within me.  Loose my body, finances, ministry, mind and family in Jesus’ Strong Name.”

“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. …Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.”   (1 John 4:4, 17)

As Jesus is so are we in the world.

Jesus and you are absolute masters of Satan, fallen angels and demon powers.

Be Blessed ... John and Barbara Hamel
