The Door
And More. For Sure!

by Pastor John Hamel

“I am the door: by me if any man enters in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.” (John 10:9)

In the Gospel of John, chapter ten, Jesus made it clear that He is the only door into the sheepfold.

In Jesus’ day, a sheepfold or a sheep pen was constructed of piled stones.  There were four high stone walls forming a square pen.  One of the walls had an opening for going in and out.  The Shepherd would lead the sheep into the pen then lay himself across the doorway.  This way he could keep the sheep in and intruders out.  This is why Jesus called Himself “the Door.”

Jesus said that all who enter into the pen through Him would be saved.  This is a metaphor.  It is an expression of salvation.  He means that all who trust in Him as their Shepherd shall be saved from the penalty and punishment of their sin.

“For the wages of sin is death (separation from God’s love) but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus.” (Romans 6:23)

All who trust in Jesus and Jesus alone will be safe from eternal separation from God.

Jesus also said that all who trust in Him would “go in and out.”  This is an expression of protection.  Jesus is saying that all who hook up with His flock will be protected.  Protected from what?  Well, from all the attacks of Satan, the thief, who came to kill you, steal from you and destroy you.  He does this with sickness, disease, accidents, incidents, etc.  Jesus promises to protect us from the thief when we trust in Him.

“For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” (Psalm 91:11)

Finally Jesus said that all who trust in Him would “find pasture.” This is an expression of prosperity.  Jesus promises to meet every need of the one who trusts in Him as their Shepherd.

“But my God shall meet all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)

The religions of the world tell us that Jesus is not the only door into the sheepfold.  They say He is a good man, good teacher and good Prophet.  They then turn around and call Him a liar.  They say He is not who He said He was.

They also teach that God causes sickness and accidents to teach people.  They teach that He uses poverty to make people better.

Jesus said they are all wrong.  Jesus said that He is the only way to God.

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)

Jesus said Satan is the source of both sickness and poverty, not God.

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy:  I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)

Jesus promises that all who come to Him will find Eternal Life, protection and provision.

I’ve tried religion and I’ve tried Jesus.  I can tell you from experience.  Jesus is better.  Far better.

Say, “Jesus, I choose You as the Door.  In exchange for Eternal Life, protection and provision, I’ll follow Your lead.  I’ll tell the other lost sheep about Your promises, too.”

The Bible calls Jesus the “Good Shepherd” because He laid down His life for His sheep.

Lay down your selfish life and pick up your unselfish life.

Follow Him.  He’ll get you home to Heaven safely, protecting you and providing for you along the way.
